Prenatal & Postnatal
Counseling
Pregnancy and new parenthood can be one of life's most joyful chapters — and one of its most emotionally complex. You deserve compassionate, specialized support every step of the way.
The Emotional Journey of Pregnancy & Parenthood
The perinatal period — from pregnancy through the first year after birth — is a time of profound transformation. While it can bring immense joy and love, it can also bring unexpected emotional challenges that are often minimized or misunderstood.
At Carolina Blue Skies Counseling, we offer specialized perinatal mental health support through our certified PMH-C therapist, Jeanette Diekman. Whether you're navigating anxiety during pregnancy, struggling with postpartum depression, processing a pregnancy loss, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of new parenthood — you deserve compassionate, expert care that truly understands what you're going through.
Approximately 1 in 5 new mothers experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder — and these are among the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth. With the right support, recovery is absolutely possible.
You Deserve Support For All of This
Perinatal mental health challenges take many forms. All of them are real, all of them are valid, and all of them are treatable.
Postpartum Depression
Persistent sadness, numbness, difficulty bonding, or feelings of being a "bad parent" are common signs of postpartum depression — and not a reflection of your love for your baby. With the right support, you can heal.
Prenatal & Postpartum Anxiety
Excessive worry about your pregnancy, your baby's health, or your abilities as a parent. Racing thoughts, physical tension, and difficulty relaxing are common — and very treatable with specialized support.
Pregnancy Loss & Grief
Miscarriage, stillbirth, and infertility are profound losses that deserve compassionate, unhurried support. We honor your grief and walk alongside you as you find a path toward healing.
Birth Trauma & PTSD
A difficult or traumatic birth experience can leave lasting emotional wounds. Flashbacks, fear, or avoidance related to childbirth are signs of birth trauma — and trauma-informed therapy can help.
Relationship & Identity Shifts
Becoming a parent reshapes your sense of self, your relationship, and your priorities. Feeling lost, disconnected from your partner, or unsure of your identity is more common than you might think.
Perinatal OCD
Intrusive, distressing thoughts about harm coming to your baby — which feel shocking and terrifying — can be a symptom of perinatal OCD. These thoughts do not define you, and effective treatment is available.
Prenatal Anxiety & Fear
Worry about the health of your baby, fear of childbirth, or heightened stress during pregnancy are all real and valid experiences that benefit from compassionate, specialized therapeutic support.
Adjustment & New Parent Overwhelm
The transition to parenthood is one of the biggest life changes there is. Exhaustion, isolation, guilt, and uncertainty are normal — but you don't have to navigate them alone.
What Does PMH-C Mean?
The Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional (PMH-C) designation is awarded by Postpartum Support International — the leading organization in the field of perinatal mental health. It signifies that a clinician has completed advanced, specialized training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Jeanette Diekman holds the PMH-C certification (#PSI5704), making her one of a relatively small number of therapists in the Lake Norman area with this advanced level of perinatal specialization. When you work with Jeanette, you're working with someone who has gone beyond general therapy training to deeply understand the unique emotional landscape of pregnancy and new parenthood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Postpartum depression goes beyond the "baby blues" (which typically resolve within two weeks). Signs may include persistent sadness, difficulty bonding with your baby, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, and thoughts of harming yourself or your baby. If any of these resonate, please reach out — effective help is available and recovery is very possible.
Absolutely not — prenatal therapy is incredibly valuable and can actually help reduce the risk of postpartum mood disorders. If you're experiencing anxiety, stress, relationship concerns, a previous pregnancy loss, or simply want to prepare emotionally for the transition to parenthood, starting therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful step.
Not at all. Partners, spouses, and other primary caregivers also experience significant emotional adjustment during the perinatal period. Postpartum anxiety and depression can affect non-birthing parents too. Jeanette welcomes all parents and caregivers navigating this season of life.
Intrusive thoughts — disturbing, unwanted thoughts about harm coming to your baby — are more common than most people realize and are a recognized symptom of perinatal OCD and postpartum anxiety. These thoughts do not mean you are dangerous or a bad parent. They are a symptom, not a reflection of your character. Please reach out — this is very treatable with the right support.
Yes — Jeanette offers secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual sessions available to clients anywhere in North Carolina. Virtual therapy is especially convenient for new parents, and sessions are just as effective as in-person for most perinatal mental health concerns. In-person sessions are available at our Mooresville, NC office.
We accept most major insurance plans. Perinatal mental health counseling is typically covered under behavioral health benefits. We recommend contacting your insurance provider ahead of your first appointment to verify your specific coverage. Our team is also happy to help — just give us a call at 704.928.9501.
